Ellie Rigby
My name is Ellen Rigby, but I go by Ellie. I am a first year graduate student in the
Building Construction program. I grew up
in Roanoke, Virginia
and attended the University
of Virginia where I
graduated with a degree in English in 2002.
After graduation I worked at a wilderness camp and conference center for
a couple of years as a wilderness trip leader and caving, climbing, and
mountain biking instructor. Then I moved
to Wilmington, North Carolina, where I worked for two years
as an elementary school teacher's assistant in kindergarten and special needs
classrooms. I was working on my teaching
certification when I decided that I wanted to pursue something new. My husband, Jared (the man in the picture), and I moved back to Virginia and I worked as an Admissions Counselor at Hollins University
in Roanoke. Then I got a wild hair and decided to apply
to graduate school at Virginia Tech in the building construction
department. Why, you ask? For the challenge, the change of scenery, and
the opportunity to apply my mind to a new field. In my spare time I am mostly outside: working
in the garden, tubing on the New River,
hiking, biking, camping, and anything else that gets me outside and moving
around. I believe that this love of the
outdoors will steer my focus in the building industry towards sustainable
building practices and responsible development that preserves green spaces for
future generations.
